A retaining wall does two things: it holds back earth, and it creates usable space where there was none. If your yard slopes sharply, if your garden beds wash out every spring, or if you want to carve out level terraces for a patio or garden, a retaining wall is the answer. We design and build retaining walls across the Greater Toronto Area using natural stone, interlocking block, and timber.

Ontario is hard on retaining walls. The freeze-thaw cycle heaves soil and puts enormous pressure on any structure in the ground. That is why we build every wall with proper drainage behind it — gravel backfill, weeping tile, and filter fabric to let water escape instead of building up pressure. The footing goes below the frost line, and the base is compacted properly. These are not shortcuts you can see, but they are the difference between a wall that lasts 30 years and one that leans after two winters.

We work with homeowners to choose the right material for the job. Armour stone and natural limestone walls have a timeless look and incredible durability. Interlocking block systems are engineered for structural walls and come in a range of styles. Timber walls work well for garden terracing and lower-height applications. Every project starts with a site visit, and we handle permits when they are required.

Retaining Wall Services

Natural Stone Walls

Armour stone, limestone, and fieldstone retaining walls that look like they belong on your property. Built to last through decades of Ontario freeze-thaw cycles.

Interlocking Block Walls

Engineered retaining wall blocks for clean lines and consistent strength. Available in a range of colours and textures to match your home and landscape.

Timber Retaining Walls

Pressure-treated timber walls for a natural, rustic look. Best suited for low-height applications and garden terracing.

Drainage Systems

Proper drainage behind every wall — gravel backfill, weeping tile, and drainage fabric to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup that causes wall failure.

Slope Management

Terracing steep yards into usable, level spaces. We engineer multi-tier retaining wall systems that turn problem slopes into functional outdoor areas.

Permits & Engineering

Walls over a certain height require permits and may need an engineer's stamp. We handle the process and make sure everything is built to Ontario Building Code standards.

Our Retaining Wall Process

1

Site Visit & Design

We assess your slope, soil conditions, and drainage. Then we design the wall system and present material options with a detailed quote.

2

Permits & Prep

We pull permits if required, excavate the site, and prepare a properly compacted base with drainage infrastructure.

3

Build & Finish

The wall is built to spec, backfilled with drainage gravel, and finished with grading and cleanup. We walk you through the completed project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Retaining wall costs depend on the material, height, length, and site conditions. A small interlocking block wall might start around $3,000, while a large natural stone wall with drainage and engineering can be a substantial investment. We provide detailed estimates after a site visit.
In most Ontario municipalities, retaining walls over 1 metre (about 3.3 feet) in height require a building permit. Some municipalities have stricter thresholds. Walls near property lines or those supporting structures may have additional requirements. We check your local bylaws and handle the permit process.
It depends on the look you want and the job the wall needs to do. Natural stone (armour stone, limestone) is the most durable and looks great but costs more. Interlocking block is engineered for strength and comes in many styles. Timber works well for shorter, decorative walls but has a shorter lifespan in Ontario's climate.
The number one cause of retaining wall failure is poor drainage. When water builds up behind a wall with no way to escape, the hydrostatic pressure pushes the wall forward until it leans, cracks, or collapses. Frost heave from Ontario winters is the other major factor. Proper drainage, adequate footing depth below the frost line, and correct backfill prevent these problems.
A small wall can be completed in 2 to 3 days. Larger projects with multiple tiers, significant excavation, or permitting requirements may take 1 to 3 weeks. We give you a timeline during the proposal stage so you know what to expect.
